UK Couple Claim GBP56m EuroMillions Lottery Jackpot - 02-17-10

February 17 - For a married couple from Cirencester, Gloucestershire in England, life will never be the same after they recently won half a EuroMillions lottery jackpot worth £56 million, making them instantly richer than a host of British celebrities, including actor Hugh Grant and musician Van Morrison.

Yet to have their identities revealed, the couple's EuroMillions lottery windfall has put them into a decidedly different tax category than they are used to. And now they can easily compete with Britain?s wealthiest people in terms of luxurious holidays, cars, houses, restaurants and anything else money can buy.

In fact, the pair's £56 million EuroMillions payday makes the earnings of many of Britain's biggest and best-loved personalities pale in comparison. For instance, Oscar winner and renowned rest auteur, Sir Michael Caine is reportedly only worth £45 million according to the 2009 Sunday Times Rich List.

This is a big deal because the jackpot is the biggest ever lottery jackpot won in the UK. The second winning EuroMillions lottery ticket was bought in Spain. In November last year, a EuroMillions lottery jackpot that reached £91 million was split by a couple from Wales and a syndicate from Liverpool.

The couple who won over £45 million then were Les and Sam Scadding. When told about this latest EuroMillions lottery payout, Les told reporters that he and his wife 'can't believe we've been knocked off the top spot so soon.' And they weren't the only previous lotto millionaires to congratulate the winners.

Angela Kelly, from Glasgow, Scotland who won £35.4 million in August 2007 also told reporters that she wished the new lottery winners well. 'I hope they enjoy as much happiness as I have been able to share with my friends and family thanks to my win,' she said. 'We wish the new winners all the very best.'

Interestingly, according to a study conducted by the Paris School of Economics last year across 8,000 people in the UK who won big lottery cash between 1994 and 2005, many people saw a drop in their quality life instead of an improvement. It revealed that many people who win more smoke and drink more.
