Syndicate Learns of GBP2.6m Lottery Jackpot on Facebook - 12-09-09

December 9 - Most lottery jackpot winners learn about their good fortune by watching lottery draws live, by checking their tickets at lottery retailers or by being called by fellow lottery syndicate members, but for one English lottery syndicate, popular social networking website Facebook was the bearer of good news.

It seems that 22 members of the syndicate learned of their good fortune when they went into Facebook and saw that their lottery syndicate leader Paul Cotter had changed his status to: 'We've won £2,625,215 on the Lotto. This is not a joke. Please call me, anyone who is in the syndicate, as soon as possible.'

Most of the 23-person lottery syndicate work for Servisair at Terminal 3 of Heathrow Airport in London. As such, 22 of the lucky lotto winners won £100,900, before taxes. One of the winners, Monica Bermudez of Maidenhead in Berkshire, could not believe her luck when she visited Facebook on that fateful day.

'I remember slamming my laptop shut when I read Paul's message on Facebook. I just assumed it was a joke because the most we had ever won before was £40.' According to 27-year-old Bermudez, it wasn't the first time Cotter used Facebook to alert the lottery syndicate about lottery wins, no matter how big or small.

As he had four shares in the lottery syndicate, 55-year-old Cotter won himself a cool £403,600 before taxes. It was he who bought the lucky Lucky Dip lottery ticket for last week's Saturday draw that yielded the multi-million pound lottery jackpot, which means he'll no doubt be the toast of his colleagues at Heathrow.

Interestingly, when quizzed by the media on the huge lottery payout, Cotter revealed that he was not all that surprised as 15 years ago a palm reader in California told him he'd 'win a large amount of money in December and that the money would go into his bank account on a Tuesday' - all of which came true last week.

Cotter also revealed that handing out the large lottery checks to the syndicate members made him feel like Father Christmas. He also said that when he found out that they had got all six numbers correct and thus won £2,625,215, he recognized that it was one of the best days of his life.
