October 1 - For nine members of a lottery syndicate and regular patrons of
Doon Inn, a popular local pub in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, life
will never be the same again after their chosen six numbers were drawn on
Saturday night in the
UK National Lottery draw, netting them the
?4,525,058 jackpot.
The winners learned about their good fortune at the Doon Inn, where they watched
the UK National Lottery draw live on TV. Although four of the lucky
winners chose to remain anonymous, the others are Bobby McLauchlan, 51, brothers
Sandy, 65, and William Morton, 61, Jim McGrail, 49, and Iain Macdonald, 55.
Watching the draw, the men quickly scribbled down the winning numbers on a beer
mat before realizing that the numbers matched those on their ticket, netting
each man roughly ?500,000. Said Sandy Morton, who purchased the winning lottery
ticket, 'It's fantastic. It is a lot of money and all the boys are over the
moon.'
And the timing couldn't have been better for one of the winners, Jim McGrail,
who lost his job earlier this year. Said an ecstatic McGrail to reporters at a
news conference in Glascow this week, 'I worked at Freescale in East Kilbride
and was made redundant earlier in the year so this is especially great news for
me.'
McGrail admitted that he wasn't down the pub with his pals on Saturday night, so
when he was called by one of them to tell him the good news he thought they were
playing a practical joke on him. In fact, it was only after he'd been called by
each of the syndicate members that he began to believe his good fortune.
'I was in the house and I got a phone call and I didn't believe it to be
honest,' McGrail admitted. 'I made nearly every one of the syndicate members
phone me just to make sure that it was true. As yet I've not really decided what
I will spend the money on, but I would like a new car and maybe a new
motorbike.'
The syndicate told reporters that after playing the same UK National Lottery
numbers for 15 years, they only recently decided to switch to the Lucky Dip, and
lucky for them they did. Said Kate Houlsworth, who runs the Doon Inn, 'I know it
sounds corny but you couldn't get a better bunch of guys.'
The winning UK National Lottery numbers from Saturday, September 26 were 03, 05,
17, 32, 40, 43 and bonus ball 29.
