Oz Lotto Draw Yields Two AUD$53 Million Winners - 07-11-09 |
July 11 - On Tuesday June 30 this year, Australia's popular Oz Lotto lottery draw broke all previous records by boasting the highest jackpot in the country's history, reaching a staggering AUD$106 million due to a long series of rollovers, but that all came to end when two lucky winners each scooped $53 million.
Expected to reach $90 million, the Oz Lotto jackpot exceeded all expectations as Australians from far and wide descended on lottery retailers across the nation to buy their tickets, right up until the closing time that Tuesday evening. Renowned for being laidback, Aussies didn't seem to mind queuing for tickets.
Following the draw, and a collective sigh of disappointment across the country as millions of Oz Lotto ticket holders realized the 'big one' has escaped them, the $106 million question was whether there were any winnings tickets. They didn't have long to wait as Oz Lotto operator, SA Lotteries confirmed there were.
Interestingly both of Australia's newest multi-millionaires are both from the Gold Coast. One of the lucky winners has been identified a 40-something-year-old man from the western suburbs of Adelaide, who purchased a $15.05 14 game Ezi-Pick ticket from a cafe located in the city's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The anonymous winner reportedly told SA Lotteries officials, 'I just watched the draw, matched three numbers and the other four numbers just fell into place. I could not move, I could not react, I could not do anything but just sit there and stare at my ticket. I never expected to win, never mind more than $50 million.'
The other OZ Lotto jackpot winners are reported to be a middle-aged couple, who bought their lucky ticket from a lotto retailer called Lucky Mermaid News. Speaking to SA Lotteries officials, the couple admitted this was the first time they ever bought Oz Lotto tickets, doing so only because of its huge jackpot.
As to what the three enviable Oz Lotto jackpot winners are intending to spend their new-found wealth on, all three are reportedly still coming to terms with their good fortune, and have yet to make specific plans. However, there has been mention of donations to charities, splurging on family and financial advisors.
