NY Lottery Could Offer Powerball Tickets - 04-25-09 |
April 25 - As part of a plan to help boost New York state's ever-declining coffers that have been hard hit as a result of America's suffering economy, the New York Lottery is reportedly considering the possibility of adding Powerball lottery tickets to its portfolio of lottery products.
Although it already offers the popular multi-state lottery game, Mega Millions, New York state legislators have already authorized the introduction of another multi-state game in order to help the cash-strapped state close gaps in its straining budget.
According to New York Lottery spokesperson Jennifer Givner, New York state along with 11 other existing Mega Millions states - including New Jersey and Massachusetts, are not averse to the idea of introducing a Powerball Lottery game to attract more players and boost state revenues.
She said, 'Currently the states are working with Powerball's governing body, the Multi-State Lottery Association, to get approval for the sale of tickets for Mega Millions tickets and Powerball Lottery tickets.' Currently residents of New York have to buy Powerball tickets from neighboring states.
These include Pennsylvania, Vermont or Connecticut. The revenues lost from these ticket sales each amount to millions of dollars that, particularly during this recession, would go a long way to help fill up New York's straining coffers. It is unknown when or if the Powerball will be introduced by the state.
The Powerball Lottery takes place every Wednesday and Saturday night at 10:59 pm ET. Five white balls are drawn out of 59 along with one red ball out of 39. Currently the Powerball Lottery is considered the nation's most popular lottery game and is played by millions of lottery fans in 30 states.
These include Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, U.S. Virgin Islands, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
