Mother of Drive-by Victim Wins $211,000 Lottery Prize - 03-13-09 |
March 13 - While nothing will bring 29-year-old Markey Canady back after he was murdered in a drive-by shooting in Racine, Wisconsin in 2005, at least his struggling mother Phyllis can look forward to a brighter future after she won the $211,000 grand prize in a recent Wisconsin Lottery Badger 5 draw.
Since Markey's tragic death, Phyllis has been struggling day-after-day to cope with looking after and providing for her remaining five children - which include a 17-year-daughter, a 20-year-old daughter, a 22-year-old-son and a 25-year-old daughter - as well as up to six grandchildren left behind by Markey.
However, while money is no substitute for the death of a loved one, Phyllis' lucrative Wisconsin Badger 5 lottery windfall will go a long way to help make the lives of her and her family more bearable. 'I'm not going to says it's been easy because it hasn't been. It's been very hard, but it's just day by day,' she said.
Phyllis, who is a regular Wisconsin Badger 5 lottery player, always uses the ages of her children in her lottery numbers, the same numbers that proved to be extremely lucky earlier this week when she found out that she had won $211,000. She couldn't believe her good fortune when she heard the news.
'I think God has really blessed me because he knows I've been struggling. Now I can get the house that Markey always wanted me to have. If God were to take me today, at least I could say my grandkids have a place to go,' she said. According to Phyllis, her deceased son had always wanted to build her a house.
Phyllis bought the winning Badger 5 lottery ticket at her local Spring Street Mobil, which is close to the hospital she works at. Said the owner of the store, PC Reddy, 'Phyllis has been a regular customers of ours for over three years. She comes in everyday for tickets so I am very happy that she finally won.'
Interestingly, Spring Street Mobil has proved to be something of a 'hot spot' for Wisconsin lottery winners, because it has sold five winning lottery tickets worth $10,000 and above in the last five years. Each panel of a Badger 5 lottery ticket costs $1 per draw and a maximum of five numbers can be played.
