Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot for Marin Sheriffs - 05-06-09 |
May 6 - It is no secret that people in law enforcement the world over are not very well paid, but for two sheriffs from Marin County in the U.S. state of California who have been dating, they'll never have to worry about money ever again after recently winning a whopping $76 million Mega Millions jackpot.
Deputy sheriff Anneliese Hansen thought her boyfriend Brian Cabaud was just kidding around last Saturday when he showed up at the Marin County sheriff's department off duty right before she was due to start her shift, and excitedly told her they had just won the massive Mega Millions lottery windfall.
In fact, to convince her, Cabaud had to drag her to Strawberry Chevron Food Mart in Mill Valley where he bought the winning lottery ticket the Thursday before. She could not believe her eyes when he passed the ticket through the lottery scanner and it clearly indicated that the ticket was worth $76 million.
Not satisfied with her state of disbelief, Cabaud reportedly pretended to tear up the ticket, snapping his girlfriend out of her shocked state. But she seemed to take the joke, albeit a cruel one, in her stride. 'I guess it's always fun to see a deputy sheriff jumping up and down,' she said at a later press conference.
The couple, who both grew up in Marin, met at the sheriff's department and are currently living together. Cabaud, who is 31, and Hansen, who is 24, have not yet decided whether to take the full amount of their Mega Millions jackpot ($75.7 million over 26 years before tax) or take the lump sum ($48 million).
No matter, as they still have 60 days from the winning Mega Millions lottery draw to decide. As to what the lucky lottery couple intend to do with their millions, they're still trying to figure that out, but they did admit to wanting to visit Disneyland again as well as make a substantial donation to a special cause.
At the press conference Hanson said that it was fate that just before the Mega Millions draw she asked Cabaud, 'Just to be clear, if you buy a ticket or if I buy a ticket, it's our ticket, right?'. He said yes. The winning numbers that changed the couple's lives forever are 9, 16, 24, 40, 43 and mega number 35.
