Lucky $88m Powerball Lottery Winner a Mystery - 06-22-09 |
June 22 - If there are two words in the English language that are most associated with lotteries the world over, the first is 'hope', as in every lottery ticket buyer lives in hope that they'll win jackpot millions, and the second is 'intrigued', as in everyone is intrigued when a jackpot worth millions is won, but is unclaimed.
Intrigued is what most people are in the small town of Kings Mountain, which lies 30 miles west of Charlotte, North Carolina (NC), after one of the town's 10,500 residents bought the winning ticket in last Saturday's Powerball Lottery. The ticket is worth a staggering $88.1 million, but the winner has yet to come forward.
According to a Powerball Lottery spokesperson, the winning ticket was definitely purchased in Kings Mountain, but the lottery organization is no closer to finding out the identity of the fortunate winner. The winning numbers of Saturday's Powerball Lottery were 3, 11, 18, 22, 28, and the Powerball number was 33.
Said Silver Express gas station cashier, Wendy Burnett, 'Everybody in town is talking about it, but no one knows who has it.' Silver Express is one of the retailers in the town that sells Powerball Lottery tickets. As per Powerball Lottery rules and conditions, the mystery winner still has 180 days to claim his or her jackpot.
This is only the second winning Powerball Lottery jackpot ticket sold in North Carolina since the state joined the multi-state lottery three years ago. In November 2006, Halifax resident Jackie Alston won $74 million jackpot. On that occasion, the winner waited three months before claiming her enormous winnings.
'Jackie Alston told us she waited three months to claim her prize to get her ducks in a row, which meant she hired herself a financial adviser as well as a PR firm,' said NC state lottery spokesperson, Pam Walker. Walker declined to disclose which of Kings Mountain's 16 lottery retailers sold Saturday's winning ticket.
But whoever the lucky $88m Powerball Lottery winner is, one thing is for sure and that it how much money they can expect to receive. If they choose to take the whole amount, they'll enjoy 30 installments over 29 years. If they opt for a lump sum, they can expect to get $42 million before state and federal taxes.
