July 4 - When it comes to running any kind of lottery, there are really only
two rules - one, make sure the numbers called are reported correctly and two,
make sure winners are paid what they are owed. This week, the Kansas Lottery
broke the first of those two rules.
According to a recent Kansas Lottery news release, the Lottery's Pick 3 numbers
drawn on June 29th, June 30th and July 1st this year were all reported
incorrectly. This was due to a 'lottery software malfunction' as a result of a
conversion to new lottery software last weekend by the Lottery's vendor, GTECH.
Apparently the Random Number Generator (RNG) that chooses numbers randomly in
the Pick 3 draws malfunctioned, which resulted in 'false' winning numbers
being reported to the public as opposed to the actual or true numbers that were
drawn.
The embarrassing mistake was detected during the Lottery's security verification
process. However, to their credit, Kansas Lottery officials have agreed to pay
out prizes to winners on both the false and true numbers for the Pick 3 draws
that took place on the said dates.
Said Kansas Lottery executive director, Ed Van Petten, 'The integrity of the
Pick 3 draws are themselves not in question, but instead GTECH's software that
generated and reported those numbers after the conversion last weekend. However,
we are pleased to report that the malfunction has been fixed.'
Here are the correct numbers with the 'false' numbers in brackets:
June 29th: 4-2-3 (1-6-7)
June 30th: 5-1-6 (0-0-4)
July 1st: 8-3-9 (0-7-1)
