Insurance Workers Share $140m Mega Millions Jackpot - 03-18-09 |
March 18 - For ten colleagues from Chubb Insurance in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, life will never be the same again as a one of the many Mega Millions lottery tickets they pooled together to buy, finally paid out to the tune of a whopping $140 million before state and federal taxes.
The lucky ten - each of whom works in Chubb Insurance's IT department - actually won a Mega Millions lottery jackpot worth $216 million, but they all agreed to take the $140 million cash out option. According to the winners, as colleagues they had all been part of the lottery pool for a few years.
Said winner and Toms River resident, Bob Space, 'Since we have all been playing the Mega Millions lottery, the most we have won is about $7. When I bought the winning ticket on Monday from the Singin Oil gas station close to where I live, little did I know that it would change all of our lives.'
Perhaps the way Lady Lucky rewarded the insurance IT crew had something to do with the fact that Space bought the ticket during a howling snowstorm. Either way, all ten of the winners are now free to do whatever they want with their lives. Although surprisingly perhaps, none have chosen to quit their jobs.
Another winner, Oscar Oviedo of Stewartsville, NJ can thank his lucky stars that he has such a great relationship with Space. As he didn't have his $5 contribution before the draw, he told Space he would pay him later. So, before breaking the good news to Oviedo, Space asked him to pay over the $5.
Said Oviedo, 'When Bob approached me in the morning and asked my to pay over my $5 for the Mega Millions lottery tickets, I thought he was being rude. But after I paid him the $5, he smiled broadly, shook my hand and congratulated me on being a millionaire. I couldn't believe what he was saying.'
The Mega Millions lottery is one of the biggest multi-state lotteries in the United States, and is enjoyed in 12 states - Washington, Virginia, Texas, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Massachusetts, Maryland, Illinois, Georgia and California. An individual Mega Millions ticket costs $1.
