June 29 - Like a scene from a Hallmark movie, when Floyd 'Digger' O'Del
offered to drive his best friend and neighbor, Gerold Banick, to Salem, Oregon
to fetch his $1.9 million Oregon Lotto Megabucks winnings, little did he
expect to receive a $133,000 tip for his trouble.
After Banick, a Condon resident, matched all six numbers in the Oregon
Megabucks Lottery draw in May this year, the lucky lotto winner won over $6
million which, after state taxes and choosing the lottery's lump sum payout
option, worked out at approximately $1.9 million.
The only catch was that Banick was required by the Oregon Lottery to drive to
Salem, Oregon to claim his prize in person. This is where his pal 'Digger'
stepped up, and offered to drive Banick to the town famous for being the
namesake of a town famous somewhere in America for burning witches.
Said Digger after his friend surprised him with the generous 'tip', 'I just
couldn't believe it when Gerold said he would give me $133,000 just for driving
him to Salem. Heck, for that kind of money I would have hired him a limo towed
by 12 naked Playboy bunnies, painted Colt 45 silver singing Dixie.'
In response, Banick just smiled at these words - which may not have actually
been said as a large degree of artistic license may be involved on the part of
this writer - and then went on to joke that it was surely the 'most expensive
cab ride he's ever taken in his life or is ever likely to take again'.
As for the rest of his winnings, the newest millionaire in Condon, Oregon said
that he'll use some of the money to pay off his bills, help out various people
in his life financially, and provide for his granddaughter's future college
education.
