Cowboy Wins $232 Powerball Lottery Jackpot - 06-10-09 |
June 10 - While it is no secret that 'even cowboys get the blues', for down-on-his luck cowboy from the U.S. state of South Dakota, 23-year-old Neal Wanless, the blues is the last thing on his mind after he won a bucking bronco $232 million Powerball Lottery jackpot last month.
The story of Neal Wanless and his parents reads like a blurb for a Hallmark movie of the week, after the South Dakotan, who attended Todd County High School and to this day is still described as the proverbial 'nice guy', fell on hard times and was forced to move into a cramped old camper.
As a result of the current economic crises, the bank foreclosed on the Wanless' home recently, forcing them to move into a camper on their ranch. But theirs is a tale of trying to scratch a living out of selling scrap metal and living from hand to mouth, like millions of American families hit by hard times.
However, their sad tale has now turned into one of rags to riches, as their days of struggling to survive are a thing of the past, highlighted when the shy, but grinning Wanless accepted a giant Powerball Lottery jackpot check at a camera-flashing news conference last week, with a look of relief.
Said the lucky lotto cowboy, 'I need some time to let this sink in. I'd like to thank the Lord for giving me this opportunity and blessing me with this great fortune. My family and I have been greatly helped by the community and I intend to repay all of the kindness bestowed on us many times over.'
Despite being presented a check for the full $232 million Powerball Lottery jackpot amount, Wanless chose to take the lump-sum amount of $88.5 million, which should go a long way to get his family's home back and turn the struggling ranch around. That is if he and his family want to stay.
After their long and hard struggle under the South Dakota sun, the family would no doubt be forgiven for seeking greener pastures and relocating to the house and area of their dreams. As yet, Wanless has not disclosed what he and his family intend to spend his Powerball Lottery millions on.
