Chinese Lottery Winner Hospitalized for Anxiety - 12-02-09

December 2 - A Chinese man who won 12.5-million-yuan ($1.8 million) from a Chinese Lottery jackpot has made headlines across China not because of his newly won windfall, but because he had to be hospitalized as a result of suffering from extreme anxiety that his winning ticket would be stolen.

According to reports, China's newest instant lottery millionaire could not believe his luck when he realized that he held a winning lottery ticket worth such a large amount, so much so that he became so anxious that he couldn't sleep or eat for three days. He did not even tell his family about his good fortune.

When the winner's family noticed that he was not eating or sleeping and was behaving very strangely, they had him hospitalized. He spent three days in hospital where he managed to get some sleep and eat some food, but as soon as he was discharged, the winner's anxiety about his lottery ticket returned.

Not eager to face his family, the man got a room at a 5-star hotel near his home in Suqian City, Jiangsu Province to try to hide the winning ticket. According to the winner, he looked at hiding the ticket under the hotel room carpet. However, he eventually came around and approached Chinese lottery officials.

But even when he was signing to receive his winnings from Chinese lottery authorities, he reportedly shook like a leaf and begged them not to disclose his identity for fear or being robbed. But the tale gets even stranger, because the winner's wife supposedly still has no clue about her husband's good fortune.

According to the lucky Chinese lottery winner, he will tell his wife about the lottery money only when 'he has fully prepared her to receive the surprising news.' This sounds very suspicious, almost like he is weighing up the pros and cons of telling his wife, versus trading her in for a younger model. Just kidding.

Global lottery experts project that China's lottery market will grow by as much as 31 percent by 2010 to US$34.5 billion, which will make it the world's second largest lottery ticket-buying nation after the United States.
