August 16 - A recent story to come out of Canada echoes the 'screwed if you
do, screwed if you don't' sentiment after the B.C. Lottery Corporation updated
its dated branding and logo, and soon came under fire from a political party for
the amount of money it spent on the exercise.
After the Victoria-based B.C. Lottery Corp recently spent $430,000 on a
brand revamp to better reflect its business that has evolved beyond just
lotteries, the New Democrat Party (NDP) publically criticized the company for
not investing the money in better lottery security measures.
Last year B.C. Lottery Corp came under heavy scrutiny after ombudsman,
Kim Carter, published a report that exposed various 'security issues' that if
left unresolved, could result in Canadian lottery players facing the risk of
being ripped off by lottery retailers and their employees.
Said NDP spokesperson, Harry Lali, 'Following all the bad publicity that B.C.
Lottery Corp has been exposed to over the last couple of years, it boggles the
mind that they would turn around and just change the company's branding, at cost
of almost half a million dollars to tax payers.
'Their actions have left me scratching my head in wonder as a new logo and brand
obviously won't do anything to address the security problems that the B.C.
Lottery Corp needs to spend time and resources addressing,' he said.
In response, B.C. Lottery Corp vice-president of corporate affairs, Kevin Gass,
shrugged of the NDP's criticisms, saying the corporation is in the process of
implementing all the recommendations made in the ombudsman's report.
'The cost associated with B.C. Lottery Corp's logo change are well within the
operating budget that we have for this year. I can assure you that there was no
incremental spending on the new logo,' he said.
