Canadian Brothers win $1m from Lottery Scratch Ticket - 04-29-09 |
April 29 - For brothers Tim and George King from the city of Regina, the capital of Canada's Saskatchewan province, Lady Luck finally smiling down on them after they recently bought a Western Millions lottery scratch ticket, which, to their utter surprise, just happened to reveal a whopping $1 million cash prize.
When asked about their good fortune, Tim explained that for about the last year and a half he and his brother had been splitting the cost of Western Millions lottery scratch tickets twice a week. 'I buy everything he has on the counter, one of each, Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings. I try to break even.'
Tim King was referring to his habit of buying the lottery scratch tickets from his local convenience store, Manna Confectionary in Regina. As an afterthought, the lucky winner added, 'Most of the time I don't (win).' He bought the winning scratch ticket last Friday, little realizing how much it would change his life.
George also took a while for it to sink in just how much money he had won. 'I looked at the Western Millions lottery scratch ticket several times. Tim also looked at it again and then we called our parents to share the good news with them.' The brothers admitted that they had never seen so many zeros before.
According to the brothers, they'll each use their half of the lottery ticket windfall to boost their respective retirement funds that have taken a hammering over the last 18 months due to the global recession, and the resulting market crises. Tim is six years away from retirement while George is just four years away.
Said George, 'There isn't a great deal of time to recoup as I'm not 25. What this does is in one fell swoop is recoup it. It takes the worrying out of the financial end of my retirement planning.' The King brothers are just two of the millions of North Americans who have been hard-hit +by the current economic crises.
While their retirement funds now look a lot better than they did a week ago, both brothers will continue to work. According to the Saskatchewan Lotteries Corp, which offers Western Millions lottery scratch tickets, the brothers' windfall was the fourth million dollar prize (or more) paid in Saskatchewan this year.
