March 3 - An unnamed passenger who recently flew with Irish airline Ryanair
is either barking mad or was simply showing his distaste for airline food, when
he ate a winning Scratchcard lottery ticket worth €10,000. It seems the
fed up flyer ate the ticket after he was told that he couldn't be paid out on
the plane.
According to news reports, the man - who has chosen to remain anonymous - was
flying from Krakow, Poland to the United Kingdom when Lady Luck smiled on him.
While taking part in an in-flight Scratchcard competition aboard the budget
airline, he realized that he had won a jackpot cash prize of €10,000.
But when flight attendants informed him that there was not enough money on board
to pay him instantly, and that he would have to contact the company running the
Scratchcard promotion in the UK, his smile turned into a frown. And unhappy to
wait to receive his generous windfall, he decided to dine out on it.
Despite pleas from the flight's crew and fellow passengers to stop, he stuffed
the €10,000 Scratchcard into his mouth and began to chew. Whether he
swallowed the €10,000 voucher or spat it out is unknown. But what is known, is
that the passenger's crazy actions lost him a guaranteed pay out of €10,000.
Following the incident, Ryanair confirmed that the man would not be reimbursed
for the chewed €10,000 Scratchcard ticket, but that the prize would instead be
donated to charity. So at least the man's crazy action ended up doing more good
than harm. That said, it's unknown if Scratchcard ticket ink is toxic.
Like most airlines, Ryanair is using the free publicity generated by the now
infamous '€10,000 Scratchcard ticket eater' to get its name out there. The
airline has confirmed that it has set up a poll on its website so that people
can vote on which charity or good cause they think the €10,000 should be donated
to.
Of course, for our money the check should be made out to the 'Crazy People on
Planes Who Eat Winning €10,000 Scratchcard Tickets Foundation'
