$232m Lottery Jackpot Winner Sold in Winner - 06-03-09 |
June 3 - Lovers of irony and coincidence will love this. A week ago a lucky - and as yet unknown - lottery fan bought a South Dakota Lottery ticket from a store in the small South Dakota town of Winner and then, you guessed it, proceeded to become the sole winner of a whopping $232.1 million lottery jackpot.
Hence the 'ironic' headline (which goes out to Alanis). As if delivered on the wings of angels direct from the Gods above, the winning South Dakota Lottery ticket seemed destined to be purchased in a town called Winner by a lucky winner, one who should he or she wish, will never have to work another day again.
Of course the $232.1 million question is just who the lucky winner from Winner is. As a ranch town with less than 3000 residents, its shouldn't take long before the lucky lotto winner comes forward in Winner to accept their windfall from South Dakota Lottery officials. The smaller the town, the longer the gossip train.
Plus, in a town as small as Winner, it will be very interesting to see if the latest South Dakota Lottery millionaire is a ranch owner, a farmer, a ranch owner's wife, a farmer's daughter, the trusty sheepdog Steve or even the town clergyman. Also, when the winner from Winner comes forward, will they share the wealth?
Like a leftover storyline from ex-writers of the Young and the Restless, will the $232 million South Dakota Lottery fortune end up pulling the town of Winner apart or together? We hope the latter. Think about it, wouldn't it be great if Winner's winner paid to have every farm animal in the area fitted with a gold tooth?
Or how about if he or she paid to have every proudly American-built truck in the town replaced with a new, more reliable and gas-efficient truck like a Nissan or a Toyota or a Mitsubishi? Or what about paying to have the town's names officially changed to 'Thereisonlyonewinnerhereanditisme', just for a month or two?
Said South Dakota Lottery executive director, Norm Lingle (who was in an introspective and reflective mood when he released the following deep statement), 'How often does something like this happen - a lottery jackpot winner in Winner, South Dakota?' The short answer is not very often Norm. Not very often at all.
