$172m Ill Lottery Winner Learns of Windfall - 05-15-09 |
May 15 - A 25-year-old woman from the Spanish island of Majorca, who was recently bed-ridden with flu, received a life-changing surprise when she checked her tickets days after a massive EuroMillions lottery draw, only to discover that she had won the whopping 126 million euro (US$172 million) jackpot.
The women, who has chosen to remain anonymous, would have checked her EuroMillions lottery tickets sooner if it weren't for the fact that she was lying at home suffering from influenza. She said, 'I was still sick on Monday, but I decided to go to work for fear of losing my job given the economic crisis.'
She turned out to be the sole holder of the EuroMillions lottery ticket with the winning numbers 4, 23, 24, 29, 31 and bonus numbers 8 and 9. Although based in Majorca, the fortunate winner purchased her lucky lottery ticket through Serviapuestas for the big draw that was held last week in Paris, France.
Said a Serviapuestas official in a statement, 'When she learned the good news she was frightened and at the same time very, very moved. Logically she asked us many questions to make sure it was all real and not a big joke.' Accordingly, the winner told the company she thought they were 'pulling my leg'.
As to what the lucky lady intends on spending her newfound wealth on, she has reportedly already got some ideas. She told EuroMillions lottery officials that she is planning to buy a large country house in Majorca, as well as invest in some horses. 'I have always liked animals, nature, sensitive things,' she said.
To put her EuroMillions lottery winnings in perspective, they are enough for her to buy two brand new Airbus A-320 commercial jets. The EuroMillions is a lottery that is played by lotto fans from nine European countries - Austria, Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.
Each week the EuroMillions starts at 15 million euros and rolls over to the following week if there is no winner.
